In ways that are sometimes obvious and sometimes subtle, the language we use in our work sends a message about how we welcome and respect others—especially members of marginalized communities. Learn some of the ways you can make sure your words convey that UT is a place where everyone belongs and matters.

Ashley Aldridge currently serves as the communications director in the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her career has included various roles including news producer, social media manager, and associate director of media and public relations. She earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from Alabama State University and her master’s degree in management–public relations from the University of Maryland Global Campus.
