Creative Communications

What we can do will make your head swim

If marketing and communicating about your department, programs, initiatives, and activities make you feel like a fish out of water, we’re the group for you.

Creative Communications can help you determine an effective way to reach your target audience with a refined message. We can help you create a web presence, produce a brochure, or share vital information in a staff manual—and so much more. We produce the university’s admissions materials, numerous periodicals and publications, UT’s homepage and core website, and countless promotional pieces for campus events, programs, and initiatives. Our efforts bring students to the university, support research and outreach efforts, and encourage academic and enrichment activities across the campus.

Ready for the world logoOne of our most prominent efforts has been supporting “Ready for the World: The International and Intercultural Awareness Initiative.” Through Ready for the World, the University of Tennessee is helping students gain the international and intercultural experience they need to succeed. In 2005, the university began a process of reallocating resources to support this initiative. The Chancellor has devoted $1.5 million to faculty recruiting, campus programming, new curriculum, new scholarships, and study-abroad opportunities that support Ready for the World in its campus diversity efforts.

“Through these efforts, undergraduates will gain a worldview that recognizes, understands, and celebrates the complexity of cultures and people,” explains Dr. Mary Papke, director of Ready for the World. Creative Communications is dedicated to supporting this vital initiative that stands to transform the campus into a culture of diversity that best prepares students for living, working, and competing in the 21st century.

Additionally, we are the stewards of the UT brand, and we have created a graphic and editorial standards guide to help everyone communicate UT’s image consistently. Through UT’s branding initiative, we are helping to position the University of Tennessee as a pivotal player not only in Tennessee, but nationally and beyond. We are building the university’s future.

Still another part of our work is maintaining ties with the university’s past. Creative Communications works extensively with the Office of Alumni Affairs to keep in touch with UT graduates. We provide collateral material to support alumni events such as Golden Graduate 50-year reunions and the annual Alumni Summer College. We also communicate with alumni through the Torchbearer, Tennessee Alumnus, and online newsletters like eTorch.

In building relationships with alumni, we also are poised to work extensively on resource development projects.

We help prepare funding proposals and case statements that highlight giving opportunities for friends of the university. Creative Communications will support the Campaign for Tennessee throughout the development effort. “By helping cultivate and nurture relationships with donors, we are in a unique position to move the university forward,” says Katherine Key, director of Creative Communications.
